Dr. Ries was one of my favorite professors who charmed us with his slides of Fayetteville and his sensitive stories of reaching for his wife's coffee cup from the floor when she was pregnant because she couldn't reach! Besides geographic endeavors, he taught humility and compassion for others in our work with teams. Life lessons long remembered. I was a student at Elmhurst College from 1969 to 1973. Paul was my adviser freshman year. I was a biology major the first year. Paul sold me on a degree in Geography. Paul was kind, smart, and an excellent teacher. Although I never pursued Geography academically.
