Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, Inc. Obituary

PAUL SHOWERS – a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, born January 23, 1955, departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 surrounded by his family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Alvin J. Showers, Sr., and Mrs. Annie Mae Showers; one sister, Mrs. Cecelia Showers Hollins; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lillian Martin Showers; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Judy Elizabeth Crews; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Linda Reed Showers and Mrs. Agnes Robinson Showers; three brothers-in-law, Mr. William A. Riley, Jr., Kendall Park New Jersey, Mr. Walter M. Massey and Mr. John H. Hollins; one nephew, Mr. Kenneth Juzang; one niece, Ms. April Denise Showers, and one great-nephew, Master John Alvin Hollins, Jr.

Mr. Showers is a product of the Mobile County Public School System, attending A. F. Owens Elementary School, Dunbar Middle School, Central High School, and because of integration in the early seventies, graduated from S. S. Murphy High School in 1973.  He also studied at Bishop State Junior College.  Paul and his twin sister, Paulette, attended Tabernacle Baptist Church Kindergarten, where they were fully equipped for elementary school and beyond, because of the early teachings of their favorite kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Sykes.  After graduating kindergarten in full cap and grown, Paul declared he was all done with going to anybody’s school because he had graduated.

Mr. Showers was raised up in the Baptist church, but later united with and was baptized as Jehovah’s Witness in 1980. As a young man in the Baptist church, he wrote several plays for the youth department that were performed during special programs. Paul was a strong believer in his faith where he read and knew the Bible from beginning to end and carried excerpts from Kingdom Melody Song 10 and Kingdom Melody Song 12 in his wallet.

Quiet, smart, and creative by nature, he loved to read and write, and was a collector of comic books.  Spending countless hours in the public library, he found interest in self-help books and how-to manuals. As a part-time entrepreneur, he published a marketing newsletter for local small businesses.  Like his dad, Paul was a talented artist and skilled electronics technician, and working on old and new television sets was his passion. His artwork and diagrams were incredibly detailed.  He taught himself how to use computer programs through his technical drawings.

His love for music dates back to high school where he played the clarinet and learned to play the piano “by ear.”  After that, he developed a love for singing and dancing.  This inspired him to help form a local rhythm and blues ‘group and band’ called, The Dynamic Sensations, with good friends, Alphonse Ford, the late Marion Thompson, Dwight Hudson, the late Jimmie King, Lawrence Jones, Johnnie Foster, Harold Jones, Ralph Collier, Ceasar Andrews, Sam Rencher, and managers Artis Goin, and Gloria Jones. Paul did most of the choreography for the group, was one of the lead vocalists, and directed some of the musical arrangements. The group performed in some of Mobile’s hottest night spots. In addition, they performed throughout Alabama, Mississippi and beyond, meeting the O’Jays and Tavares. They traveled extensively and generated a following of fans that still remember them today.

Paul is survived by four devoted brothers; Alvin J. Showers, Jr., Melvin J. Showers, Sr., Ronald R. (Marilyn) Showers, and Kenneth L. (Barbara) Showers; five loving sisters, Marilyn Showers Massey, Roselyn Showers Wilson, Lillian Showers Riley, Kendall Park, NJ, twin sister and caregiver, Paulette Showers (Rev.
