Pearline Hughes Smith, was born on August 22, 1921 in Norwood, Louisiana departed this life on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, surrounded by her family. She attended school in the East Feliciana School System. She moved to New Orleans and became a licensed practical nurse. She was a faithful member of the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Apostle Arthel Thomas.  She later joined Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Johnson.  Sister Smith served on the usher board until Hurricane Katrina caused her to relocate to Houston, Texas.  She joined Southwest Community Christian Center - The Bridge, under the leadership of Rev. Gregg Patrick - where she attended faithfully until an illness prevented her from doing so. Pearline was the loving wife of 52 years to the late James H. Smith, Sr. the love of her life. Daughter of the late Henderson Hughes, Sr. and Odeal Parker Hughes. She was blessed to share her love with her two children:  Odeal Smith Ball (Andrew) and James H. Smith, Jr., (Letha); also leaving behind to cherish her wonderful memories are her four beautiful grand children:  Marcus L. Bouie, Jasmine N. Scott, Jayla P. Smith, and James H. Smith, III,; and, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Preceded in death by Five siblings - Ernest Hughes, Annie Wooden, Richard Hughes, Ninnie Bell Johnson, and Henderson Hughes, Jr. Due to city and government regulations, only a limited number of relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Services on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home, 2120 Jackson Avenue at 9:00 a.m. Visitation from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Interment Providence Memorial Park. Due to COVID-19 all those in attendance are required to wear a face mask and to practice social distancing.
