Peggy Queen Spivey

Peggy Queen Spivey, 83, of Charlottesville, was called home on Tuesday, November 8, 2011.

Peggy was born on December 6, 1927, in Lake Wales, Florida, to the late Edgar J. Queen and the late Ruth Krause. Peggy spent her childhood in Sylva, North Carolina, after which her family relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia, where she attended high school. Following high school, she attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, returning to Portsmouth where she met the love of her life and future husband, the Reverend Charles B. Spivey Jr., to whom she was married 59 years.

Peggy was a loving, devoted, nurturing wife, mother, grand and great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend. Her life was dedicated to providing for and caring for her family and her door was always open to friend and stranger alike. The love in Peggy's heart was always apparent through her welcoming smile, her warm and positive personality, and her sense of humor. She loved social gatherings and her home was always the gathering place for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations.

Peggy is survived by a son, Mike and his wife, Liz, of Afton, Virginia; five grandchildren, Jessica, Kathryn, Sarah, Lauren, and Julia; three great-grandchildren, Luke, Kalli, and Lexi; and a daughter-in-law, Pamela "Pam" Spivey of Charlottesville.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by a son, Laurence "Larry" Spivey of Charlottesville; two brothers, David Queen of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Murray Queen of Haines City, Florida; and her step-mother, Gladys Queen of Portsmouth, Virginia.

A service of Celebration and Resurrection will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Rio Road in Charlottesville, with the Reverend Scott Davis and the Reverend Chris Fuss presiding. The family will receive friends from 3 until 3:30 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church "wish" fund at 1500 Rio Road East, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Interment will take place 11 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2011, at Holly Memorial Gardens on Route 29, North. All are invited.

The family wishes to extend its thanks to Rosewood Village Assisted Living - Hollymead, for the loving kindness and care shown to Peggy during her stay there over the last few years and to the medical staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for making Peggy's final days as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

We have such fond memories of both your parents, Mike. You won't remember all of us at Trinity UMC in Danville, but we will always have a warm place in our hearts for both Chuck and Peggy. May God's rich mercy and comfort be with each family member through your grief, and remind you of His abundant grace and peace to all who receive Him.
