Over the course of my career, there have been a few who set the bar for me. When Peter and I were both young scholars he wrote the kind of wide-ranging and wildly original books I aspired to. His “retirement” was a model of introspection, productivity and joy. Over the years we had a million friends in common and he became one of the very few FB friends I had never met. My condolences to Peter's family and especially to Mo. I just found out (looking up Peter's newest book) and am lost for words at the moment. What a presence; what an absence.

Peter was such a Presence that the World is paler without him. My deepest sympathy to his family.
