Not sure what to say?

While I had always wanted to play the flute, I remember Mr. Herr encouraging me to try all the brass instruments. A girl? Sure. You can do it. And if you decide you want to play flute, that's fine too. You have the choice. It was a life lesson for which I am grateful. There have been times in my life where I would hear one voice in my head saying "Women don't do that" and remember being handed a trumpet and told "You can do it if you want to." Thank you Peter Herr.

Very sad to hear. I was just talking about Mr. Herr, recently, about teacher i will always remember. He was such a master at "gentle direction", a real teacher's teacher. God bless him and we were lucky to have had his influence as adolescents.

Peter Herr was also my 4th-6th grade music teacher. I wish he had steered me away from playing the baritone-baby tuba, but I was a very small kid trying to break out of the small.
Mr Herr (we were so formal with our teachers back in the day) was such a great inspiration to me, encouraging a love of classical music that continues unabated to this day. I so fondly if not so vividly recall the band practices and individual lessons with Mr Herr. I remember particularly playing, marching, and...

My heart goes out to you, Mary, and your family. It was a beautiful service today. It was truly a celebration of Peter's life. He was a remarkable man who inspired so many people in so many ways. God bless you and your family.

It brings great sadness to my wife, my brother, and me to hear of Peter's passing. He was the Pied Piper to us and probably tens of thousands of others. He made such an impact on us that I can only say ”Thank you.”” For many of us from Glencoe, we were introduced to Mr. Herr in the fourth grade as our music teacher. For those who continued with music, he was our teacher through the eighth grade. He was the first teacher who was approachable. He had an inviting, warm disposition. We could...

I think everyone has a handful of people that influence the direction of their life in a positive way. All things being equal, any given individual gets to play the influencer role two or three times. Well, Peter Herr got to play that role for me and for dozens or even hundreds of others during his career. His was truly a life well lived.

Peter was a wonderful colleague. I know he will be missed by his many friends. Marianne Handler

Dear Mary, everyone at WFMT is going to miss Peter a lot. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Andi Lamoreaux

Mr. Herr, you will always have a prominent role in helping me gain my FIRST confidence in life accomplishing something new, in areas I was not already familiar like softball. You took me from 15th seat out of 16 trumpets, to or third seat, behind Steve Braudo and Lance Knobel (darn them) and it was just a matter of part of one year of private lessons, Saturday mornings, offering me advice not just on trumpet, but that of applying myself and expending effort for whatever it was I wanted to be...
