Aberdeen: Services for Peter “Pete” Evan Mattson, 63, of Aberdeen: 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating.

Military honors: Aberdeen American Legion.

Pete died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Peter Evan Mattson was born Oct. 8, 1946, to Peter and Ethel (Tonander) Mattson in Milaca, Minn. He grew up and attended school there. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a forestry degree.

Pete married Muriel Smith on Sept. 7, 1968, in Sisseton. After college, Pete entered the Army in 1969 and was discharged in 1972. He began a career with Williams Steel and Hardware of Minneapolis. Pete and Muriel moved to Aberdeen for his work. Pete worked as a reservationist for Wyndham.

Pete was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher. He was a member of Dacotah Territory Muzzleloaders and Whitetail Bowman Archery. Pete was a true outdoorsman. He loved to deer hunt with bow or muzzleloaders. They enjoyed family camping trips. Pete liked playing cribbage and gin. He was a loyal fan of the Vikings and Twins. Pete loved reading history. He liked sweets and enjoyed Muriel's cooking and baking. Pete's cat Midnight was very special to him. He was a man of his word, and would say what he meant, and meant what he said. He celebrated 11 years of sobriety. Pete and Muriel enjoyed 42 wonderful years together in marriage.

Grateful for having shared Pete's life are his wife, Muriel, Aberdeen; daughter, Erica (Brent) Stewart of Sioux Falls; son, Jesse (Jill) Mattson of Amherst, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Noah, Lily and Leif Mattson and Jack and Isaac Stewart; half-brother, Melvin Mattson; cousins: Ruth Lee, Sue Halena, Matt Mattson, Mark Mattson and John Mattson; and several other special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother, Paul Mattson.

I'd like you to know that Pete and I used to set by each other at work and he absolutely loved his kids and grandkids to the highest. He used to set and tell me stories about his camping trips and how he and Mur just loved roughing it the old fashioned way, no campers or fresh brewed coffee for him, he love campfire coffee the best. Told me of some of his outfits he had for when he would use his muzzle loaded guns and his shoots. Also said he loved hunting but now he leaves that to the...
