Peter Moffitt Obituary

Peter Kenneth Moffitt GREENSBORO - Peter Kenneth Moffitt, 51, of Greensboro passed away peacefully at home Monday, August 5th, 2013, after a valiant fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig 's Disease. Pete was born in Charlotte, NC on July 2, 1962 and grew up in Charlotte and Asheboro. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and an avid supporter of the Deacons. Pete joined Xpedx soon after graduation from WFU and enjoyed a meaningful career in the paper business for over 24 years where he developed many loyal friends. Pete was a believer that basketball should be a year-round sport and loved filling out his NCAA tournament bracket each year. He had a passion for running and was an all-round sports enthusiast. He was a very accomplished tennis player and loved time spent with his winter tennis group at GCC. Pete also valued the Wednesday night fellowship time with his bible study group. After Pete's ALS diagnosis in February of 2011, he participated in several clinical trials to help find a cure for ALS. He acknowledged that it might not help him with his fight - but he was committed to playing a role to find a cure. A large team of family, friends and co-workers organized a team named "For Pete's Sake" which, with Pete as its inspiration, participated in fundraising efforts to benefit ALS research. Raising awareness and funding for ALS was very important to him. The Pete Moffitt Courage Award was recently established at Wake Forest by his many friends and family members to recognize annually a student-athlete, coach or alumnus who demonstrates courage in his or her endeavors. Pete, his wife Susan, and daughters Hastings and Mary Layton presented the first award September 22, 2012 and were recognized at half-time on the field of the Wake Forest-Army football game later that memorable afternoon. Pete loved his family (and dog Lucy) above all else. He enjoyed time spent at the beach, being an Indian Princess Dad, Wake Forest football family tailgates, and attending school activities. Pete was an exceptional husband, father, son, and brother. He took great pride in his family. Pete is survived by his parents Camilla Eckard and William Elbert Moffitt of Charlotte; his wife of 21 years, Susan Gunter Moffitt; twin daughters, Emily Hastings Moffitt and Mary Layton Moffitt; sister, Patricia Moffitt Stavrolakis; brother-in-law, Alexander James Stavrolakis of Greensboro; aunt, Frances Moffitt O'Connell of Roswell, GA; mother- and father-in-law, Louise Hill and Layton Herbert Gunter, Jr., of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law, Louise Gunter Williams, of Centennial, CO, and Greensboro; and brother-in-law, Mark Wilson Williams of Denver, CO; nieces and nephews: Joyce Alexandra Stavrolakis and Christopher James Stavrolakis of Greensboro, Peter Layton Williams of Denver, CO, and Patricia Louise Williams of New York, NY. The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to their many faithful family members, friends and caregivers who have walked side by side with the family throughout this challenging journey. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 North Greene Street, in Greensboro, NC on Friday, August 9 at 3:00pm. A reception in the Haywood Duke Room will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canterbury School - 5400 Old Lake Jeanette Road Greensboro, NC 27455; Holy Trinity Episcopal Church - 607 N. Greene Street Greensboro, NC 27401; or The ALS Association - Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 4 N. Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. It was a shock to hear about Pete. I just found out today. I worked at Kayser-Roth and Pete was my go to person when I needed supplies. He was always a positive person to talk to and always was helpful to me. I sorry to hear he past.

You don't know me, but I was much saddened to read Peter's obituary. My sister Teresa Golding Roberts (Resi) also grew up in Charlotte, was a proud Demon Deacon, and died of ALS ten years ago. My brother-in-law established the Teresa Golding Roberts scholarship at WFU for a student from North Carolina who wants to pursue teaching as a career in Resi's memory. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that our paths cross in the future. I have been involved with the Charlotte ALS walks since before Resi died and have traveled to Washington twice for Advocacy Week. Stay involved with the Catfish Chapter. You will find comfort and gain strength there. I know what a devastating experience this has been. You all are on my heart and in my prayers. Fondly, Kathleen Golding Boyce

My thoughts and prayers are with all the Moffitt family. Pete was one of those guys that spoke to everyone and as he ran by my house often, he would throw up his hand and wave. He never met a stranger and although it came natural to him, unlike most people, he went out of his way to make it known that you were a freind. Pete will be missed but never forgotten. I will miss his wave as he ran by my house! Tim Bryson/Greensboro North Carolina

Pete, Susan and Girls,
I can't say enough about each of you and how welcome you have made me feel over these years. I truly looked forward to racing in a tri or bike race with Pete. I think of him every time I clip in. You all are an inspiration to me and my family. I am lucky to know and love each of you. As Fletcher said to me the other day- "Dad, Pete is with us. He lives in our hearts- with God!" And truly he does and will always.

"Pete was a believer that basketball should be a year-round sport and loved filling out his NCAA tournament bracket each year."

Never a truer statement than that one! I was a junior high and high school friend of Pete's in Asheboro. I have many fond memories of meeting up with Pete and his family at numerous BIG Four and ACC Tournament games in the Greensboro Coliseum. In Fact Pete used to call the BIG Four Tournament the Wake Forest Invitational, because they always seemed to win it!

My sincere condolences go out to his wife and daughters, as well as his parents and sister Patty.

Susan and Moffitt family, we are so sorry to hear about Pete's passing. What an inspiration he has been in his fight, and what a terrific guy he has been all his life. I am not able to get to Wake as often as I can, but running into Susan and Pete at tailgates was always a highlight. And it also says something about what a great friend Pete was that his fraternity was mentioned in his obituary - for whom else would that be an important thing to note? The world is a smaller place with his passing, but he leaves it a better place with his life.

August 8, 2013

What a gift you have given to each other and to your friends with the photo gallery and the video!

So many beautiful smiles, wonderful memories, and so much love!

With love to Susan, Hastings, Mary Layton, and all who love Pete and will honor and cherish his life always.

Our family was not blood-related but Pete was like the son I did not have since I have 3 daughters and Susan and Louise Gunter were like my girls too as they grew up across the street from us. Pete lived with me for a few months before marrying Susan and our families have been sharing a week together at Garden City Beach for years. We have been very much attached to one another and feel so privileged to have had these connections. Pete will forever hold a very special place in our memories and we are so grateful to God for sharing part of his life with him. We are comforted in knowing he is with God and that his long brave struggle has ended. Many beautiful memories of much laughter and love and peace and joy be with those who are left behind and assurance that we shall all be
reunited one day in the life hereafter. Love, Carolyn Peters Spencer
