PETER SMITH, 86, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016, in Fort Wayne. Born in South Bend, Ind., Peter was the son of the late Peter and Ethel Smith. He graduated from South Bend Washington High School and earned his bachelors degree from South Bend College of Commerce Business School. Peter was a Korean War Army veteran. He worked with Prudential Insurance Company for 26 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Fort Wayne Duplicate Bridge Club, Elks, American Legion Post 47, Past Member of Fort Wayne Life Underwriters, Fort Wayne CLU Chapter and Fort Wayne CPCU Chapter. Peter also served as past president of South Bend Underwriters Association and the Georgetown Little League. He enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, bridge and spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Joan Smith of Fort Wayne; children, Patricia (Chris) Carver of Amboy, Michael (Cammy) Smith of Fort Wayne, Pete (Tami) Smith of Leo, Christopher (Sherri) Smith of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Matt, Elizabeth, Tim, Ryan, Andrew, Joey, Jacob, Kinsey, Luke, Kolby, Tyler, and Nolan; eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, Harold (Pat) Smith of South Bend, and Floyd (Irene) Smith of Granger. Peter was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Sarah and Alexander Smith. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with calling one hour prior. Father Polycarp Fernando officiating. Calling also from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2016, with a vigil service at 4 p.m. at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Riley Hospital for Children. I worked with Pete at Prudential Ins. in the South Bend offie. I had always known him to be hardworking, pleasant, and always a gentleman. He was on the staff of Tom (Ike) Getzinger at that time. I worked at Pru. from '57 to '69 when I let to start my family.

Heartfelt sympathy and prayers are sent to you, Joan, and all your family. Surely Pete is enjoying his eternal reward and is at peace with our Lord in heaven.

Sorry to hear of Pete's passing...many years ago Pete and I were in the army in Korea together.Good friend ...good guy. Condolences to Joan and family.

Dear Joan,

Please accept our sincere condolences upon your loss. Pete was a charming addition to our group of bridge players on the Holland America cruise. It was a trial for you both to make it, but we are so glad you did, so we could get to know you both a little better. I'm sure Pete is now breathing easily in heaven.

We are so sorry for your loss, Joan. And for your family's loss, also. We know how much Pete loved duplicate and will be missed at the bridge table.
We didn't know Pete worked for Prudential. My father worked 32 years for Prudential in St. Louis, MO and so they were kindred spirits.
