Zirbel, Peter R. Born Feb. 9, 1951 in Beaver Dam, WI. Pete died at home Jan. 8, 2009, having faced ALS with optimism, dignity and integrity. Survived by his loving wife and best friend, Cathy Reed; sons, Jackson and Connor; parents, Mary and Reinheart Zirbel; brothers, John (Margaret Morse) and David (Shirley); sisters, Gretchen Zirbel, Martha Zirbel (Rob O'Neil), Alexa Zirbel (Michael Krausse), Frances Foley (Jay); and ten nieces and nephews. Pete grew up in Janesville, WI and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1977. He left Madison with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA, great memories (NBTR) and a host of lifelong friends. Pete joined Andersen Consulting in 1978, using his creative energy and analytical and engineering skills to develop systems solutions for manufacturing, IT and other industries. He was a partner at Andersen Consulting and Deloitte & Touche. A railroad aficionado, Pete was involved with the Milwaukee Road 261 (261.com) and served as volunteer on many Midwest excursions. He was also a history buff, a leader of Edina Boy Scout Troop 68, and was happiest hiking and canoeing in the BWCA. ALS took Pete's life much too soon, but he made the most of his 58 years. Special thanks to Jean Lister and the Fairview Hospice staff. Memorials to ALS Association of MN, Fairview Hospice, the Boy Scouts of America or Milwaukee 261. Memorial service 11 AM Friday, Jan. 23 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Rd. (West 70th St. & Hwy. 100), Edina. Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996

Not sure what to say?

Cathy - I was shocked to learn recently of Peter's untimely death as a result of seeing his father's recent obituary. Pete and I were friends in high school. I have fond memories skiing and just hanging out with him. I'll never forget the time we went all the way up to Rib Mountain at about 20 below zero. Needless to say we had the hill all to ourselves. We were also in "Fiddler on the Roof" together. I'd like to offer my belated condolences for your loss.

My sympathies to your family. I knew Pete from the Andersen and Deloitte days and always enjoyed Pete's wisdom and positive attitude. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

We are so very sorry to learn of your loss. As friends of Peter's parents, we know that you will have the support of a loving family. May all your memories, in time, be happy ones.

My deepest sympathies to your family. I knew Pete from the Cargill Lynx days as a fellow SHL'er and had many interesting conversations about trains with Pete while working together! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Pete was a good friend and work colleague. Especially while we laughed and labored to build the Minneapolis SHL business together in the late 90's. My thoughts and prayers are with Pete and all his friends and family.

To the family of Peter Zirbel:

Please accept our sympathy for your loss. It was an honor to be with Peter during his final days. May your memories bring you comfort.

Sincerely,
The Fairview Hospice Team

Cathy:
My thoughts are with you and the boys. You are a great family and your love was always with Pete. My condolences.

Katy

In the brief time I knew Pete he was always smiling and would have little tidbits of knowledge to share with me that would always make me laugh. I will miss him dearly as I learned quite a bit from him. He will always be an inspiration to me.

Pete was always a critical part of Canoe Trip festivities and lore. He made everyone feel part of the inner circle and in on tweaking of Mr. Trip - a prime reason to attend each year's venture to the river. He made Char, Katie, and I always feel welcome. Our sincere condolences to Cathy and the kids. We all will miss his smile and mischevious nature.
