I knew Phil at the Watergate Prosecution Force, 1973 - 1975. And, like everyone said, he was handsome, smart and full of energy.

I was fortunate to have Phil as my mentor during Business School (2009-2011)at NSU as a member of the Strategic Forum Student Group. One of the reasons I did my business studies at NSU was because of The Strategic Forum and Phil. Our deepest condolences to the Bakes family. Phil was a rock star in every role he inhabited. Over several decades and thousands of miles we remained lifelong buddies. Phil's jubilance never failed to rally my bleakest spirits. His wry wit still cracks a smile on my face. I probably knew Phil for over 25 years as a member -- a valued member -- of the Northwestern University Transportation Center Business Advisory Council (BAC). He was a great friend of the Center and his fellow members, students and professors. Made many meaningful contributions repeatedly over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you - Phil most definitely loved his family. I traded stories with Phil many an early morning at the gym-- all of them about the joy he felt in raising his children and seeing them come into their own. I will miss the genuine friendship that started many years ago at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School. As St. John Chrysostom said --They whom we love and lose are no longer where they were before. They are now wherever we are.
