Dear Phil, it has been many years since I have hiked with you and your wonderful hiking friends. THANK YOU! Wish I had done more hikes with you but I did enough to appreciate how much you loved the wilderness. From the High Sierra to our local hikes throughout Marin ( special outings for those of us who were solo) with a nice dinner afterward, I have so many tales to tell and lessons learned. I will never forget the afternoon you handed me your tape recorder. " Go up and sit up on the...

My dad was one of Phil's best friends. I guess I wasn't aware Phil passed on 4/3 - my dad's birthday. My dad passed in 2019 - Phil always said he'd live longer ;-) I hope they are hiking the Brooks Range together. Phil was and still is a legend. Rest well, you faithful warrior for the environment. You taught many to love and appreciate the great outdoors. Love, Denise

Mr. Arnot took my Carlmont group up Mt. Shasta in 1980. I felt safe with him as guide. I have thought a lot about Mr. Arnot since his passing and I'm missing a fine human being. He is always in my thoughts.

Phil's love of the outdoors was great inspiration for me to further explore and enjoy the wilderness. I am very fortunate to have met him through a connection he had to my father Don -- starting in elementary school and lasting through college and afterwards. I still think about you Phil and so happy to have spent time with you late in your life.

Phil was my coach for running, and for life. I may not run anymore, but I still appreciate all that he taught me about persisting and doing one's best. He was the best.

Just learned of Phil's passing from an old climbing/hiking buddy of mine. Phil was my dad's best friend for many years. My dad was also a WWII decorated veteran who passed in 2019 at 93. These guys knew how to live life and shared many hikes together through the Sierra Nevada and Alaska. Rest in Peace, Phil....you brought the love of the wilderness to so many. Hope you and Dad are in Alaska right now.

Phil was one of my late father's best friends growing up in San Francisco. Our families spent a lot of time together growing up. I saw him for lunch a few months ago and was grateful to hear some of his stories about his teaching at Carlmont High School, his time in the military, and his work as a wilderness guide. I have always been a big admirer of Phil and will remember him fondly.
