Phil was such a special person. I loved listening to his recollections of his work on the Whirlwind. I miss his inquiring mind. He is loved and missed by his Temple colleagues.

What comes foremost to mind when I think of Phil is that he was a person of high integrity and intellect. In his last few years at Temple he helped me considerably by virtue of his inquiring mind. Our discussions were usually technical, but we delved into economics, politics and philsophy as well. There was not a moment with him that I did not enjoy. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar.

I will always remember Phil as possessing one of the most penetrating intellects of anyone I have known. He was always questionning, always challenging, always digging for more information in the constant quest for learning. Even in his early 80s, Phil kept churning away, reading everything he could, and always, always, asking why? (And, at the same time, asking all of us, why aren't you doing this or doing that?)

But most of all, I will remember Phil as a very, very dear friend...
