Philip J. “PD” DeRea, 92, of Bangor, passed away peacefully, Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Walden III, Wind Gap, surrounded by his family.  He was the husband of the late Judith C. (Sabetti) DeRea, who passed away, October 24, 2014.


Born in Washington Township, June 24, 1929, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Mary (Basso) DeRea.  After the death of his mother, he was raised by his step-mother, the late, Marion (Ruggiero) DeRea.


Prior to retiring, he was employed by the PB & NE Railroad, Bethlehem.  He was a graduate of Bangor High School and honorably served his country in the US Army as a Medic with the 32nd Infantry, during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sgt.


Phil was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Roseto, the Martocci Capobianco Post of the American Legion, Roseto and was a social member of the Columbia Fire Co., Roseto.


He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, the Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame Football.


He is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Decker and her husband Brad J. of Atlantic Beach, FL, and Kathleen A. Buchanan and her husband Aaron J. of Pen Argyl, two sisters, Mary Lou Lohman of Plainfield Township, and Carol Casagrande of Roseto, five brothers, Fred of Pen Argyl, Nicholas of Leesburg, FL, Richard of Brodheadsville, Michael of Plainfield Township, and Anthony of Bangor, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.


He was also preceded in death by a brother, Domenick A. DeRea.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 11 AM, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3rd and Garibaldi Avenues, Roseto.  There will be a viewing, Tuesday evening beginning at 6 PM until 8 PM, at the Ruggiero Funeral Home, LLC, 126 E. Pennsylvania Avenue, Pen Argyl.  There will be no viewing hours on Wednesday prior to Mass.  Entombment will be in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Roseto.

Mary, Brad, Kathy and Aaron, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your father. You are in my thoughts and prayers. May your many memories bring you comfort and peace at this difficult time.

I was out of town and just learned of Phil´s passing. Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for the entire DeRea family. May the good Lord keep you and bless you in this sad time. To the DeRea family,I was so sorry to hear about Phil.He is now with his beloved wife Judy.My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mary,Brad,Kathy,Aaron and the entire DeRea family PD has friend to everyone he came on contact with and loved being the patriarch of the DeRea empire. There was one thing missing in his life. That was his only love Judy. We shall not weep but rejoice but today Judy and PD will be united forever again for eternity

I worked with PD at the PBNE from 1973-86 in the MOW Department. He was a hard worker and I learned much of my own work ethic from being around and. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Our sincerest condolences to the family. PD is now at peace and enjoying his reunion with Judy. We will always remember his happiness as he welcomed us to a visit or just to sit on the porch. May your grief be brief and pleasant memories remain in your hearts forever.
