Phil was among the finest people I ever knew. He was an exceptionally smart, knowledgeable, effective, caring, and helpful person. He was essential to the revitalization of McLean Hospital, crucial to the careers of hundreds of young clinicians, and invaluable as a consultant for patients and their therapists. He is irreplaceable as a colleague. Deepest sympathies to his family.

I met Phil in 1966 at the UMass Boston library which was in the old armory in downtown Boston across from UMass/Boston housed in the old Boston Gas Company building. I am a veteran so when I saw Phil with an army jacket on and looking older than most undergrads, I asked if he were a veteran. He said no, and was apparently wearing one of his father's old arm jackets. I immediately took a liking to Phil and we became good friends often going out to dinner with our wives.
