Philip J. Shine
1931 - 2025
Naples, FL
Philip J. Shine of Naples, FL, formerly of Springfield, MA, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025.
Born in Springfield on July 3, 1931, the son of Fred J. and Grace M. Shine, Phil grew up in Springfield and graduated from Technical High School and the University of Massachusetts, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1961, he began his law career in Springfield and spent over 50 years as a practicing attorney, primarily as a solo practitioner. His major client was Peter Pan Bus Lines, Inc.
He loved basketball (and the Celtics), and he played for a variety of intramural teams - at UMass, in the Army, and at Harvard Law. In the 1960s, he became a passionate tennis player and fan. He enjoyed playing at Forest Park and he served multiple terms as president of the Springfield Tennis Club. In his later years, Phil lived primarily in Naples, FL, allowing him to play tennis year-round at the Allen Tennis Center, where he made many good friends.
Phil was an avid reader and lifelong learner, with a passion for classical music, opera, Shakespeare, history, and political philosophy. He was known for his keen intellect, dry humor, and incisive views on politics and world events.
He was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth, Kathleen, and Philip Jr.
The funeral service will be private. Donations may be made in Phil's name to the Springfield Tennis Club, P.O. Box 80507, Springfield, MA 80507-0507.

Not sure what to say?

RIP my friend.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of your father Phil. My condolences to you and your sisters, and families.

So very sorry to hear of Phil's passing. I knew him very well and worked closely with him during my career at Peter Pan from 1979-2018. He had an incredibly keen knowledge of the law, a great wit, and taught me so much about business law over the years. Rest in Peace, Phil, and enjoy playing that perfect tennis match, my Friend!

Philip was a gentleman and a very good attorney.
