Not sure what to say?

Thank you Phil for the years we were able to spend together. A true friend.

I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the Smith Family. Phil had the biggest heart, he will be missed.

I will miss Captain Phil a lot. He was always so good to us at sea, even under trying conditions dealing with ice floes and blizzard conditions in the Bering Sea.
Everyone always got a kick out of coming down to the labs at night to check out what we were doing. This was made even more fun by the sight of him wearing his shorts. Phil's good humor with us will always be remembered and appreciated.

Our lives are richer for having known, worked with, and laughed with Captain Philip Smith. An accomplished mariner, dedicated to the mission of his ship and our university, he commanded his ship with pride. He embodied the values of the U.S. Marine Corps in the way he always supported his crewmembers, and he always had time to share a story, a smile or a word of encouragement for anyone he encountered. We'll all miss him. Rest in Peace, Capt. Phil...

I first sailed with Phil over 20 years ago. He has been a good friend ever since. I will miss him a great deal My condolences to his famiy

Phil you were great to work with and your sense of humor was unmatched! I will miss working with you.

Paul Smith & Family wish to express their deepest sympathies

I am very sorry to hear of Phil's passing. I knew Phil at West Seattle High School and in later years as a good friend to my Dad, Gene. I thought of him as a friend as well. I know my Dad thought very highly of Phil. My condolences to family and friends.

I have worked with Phil for the last 10 or so years on the Thompson. In that time I have known him demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of everyone aboard. His humor and spirit will be missed. My condolences to his family.
