I edited Phil 30 years ago when he was covering the Clinton presidential election. Even though he was a perfectionist, I got to know the warm, intelligent, caring man who Phil really was. He taught me everything I know about California politics and reminded me that surface bluster is only a reflexive pose. Enjoy your time in Heaven, Phil. You deserve it. I will miss you.
