Philip Trupp

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Philip Trupp, who departed this life peacefully on October 12, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old.

Born on November 17, 1938, Philip was the beloved son of Myer and Mary Trupp. He grew up in Baltimore, MD, then moved to Washington, DC where he developed a lifelong love for writing, scuba diving, music and adventure. He attended the University of Maryland, where he met the love of his life, Sandra Trupp and earned a degree in Philosophy.

Philip was a very accomplished man. He was a published author writing numerous books including Ruthless, Sea of Dreamers, and Tracking Treasure. He also published a book of his original Asian art called Ancient Wisdom. He was also a sought after editor having worked on Color Me Beautiful, Successful Style and many others. In total, he was the author, co-author and editor of more than 30 books. Philip was assistant bureau chief of Fairchild Publications/ABC CapCities, where he covered the White House, Pentagon, and the Supreme Court. He worked with many major newspapers and magazines and was a renowned travel writer and traversed the world writing about his scuba diving and travel adventures. Philip worked as a reporter at the Washington Evening Star and The Washington Times. As a young journalist, he covered the NASA space program and went through astronaut training. He was an NOAA aquanaut and spent over a week living underwater in HydroLab. He was an accomplished jazz musician and played drums with Roberta Flack, as well many others. He was Interstate Commerce Commission Bureau Chief for Traffic World Publications, where his investigative reporting on corruption won awards and commendations.

Philip will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and deep devotion to family and friends. He married Etta Sandra Trupp in 1962, and together they built a life rooted in love and mutual respect. Philip is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, his children, Rebecca Trupp and her husband Kevin Rolan, and John Trupp and his wife Katherine Clinesmith-Trupp to whom he was a proud father, and his four grandchildren, Zachary Price, Amy Price, Julian Trupp and Sophia Trupp all of whom cherished his gentle presence and wise counsel.

In remembering Philip, his loved ones recall his quiet strength, his generous spirit, and his unfailing loyalty. His life touched many, and his legacy will live on through those he cherished.

Philip will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

A funeral memorial service will be held on Monday, October 27 at 10 a.m. at: Joseph Gawlers Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016. Inurnment to follow at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park.
