Phillip Lee Barncard

Barncard, Phillip Lee March 19, 1960 - April 15, 2023 Phil lost his two year battle with cancer at home surrounded by family. Phil was born in Addison, MI to Ken and Helen Barncard. He grew up in Devils Lake with his sister and brothers. While growing up he enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding dirt bikes, and racing his 3 wheeler during Devils Lake Tip-Up. He graduated from Addison High School in 1978. He then enlisted in Michigan National Guard's 1461st Transportation Company in Jackson, MI. He was deployed in 1990 for Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Phil retired from the Michigan National Guard in 2000 after 21 years of service. While serving in the National Guard, Phil met the love of his life, Katie Prahl. They were married on September 2, 1995. He worked as a welder and a transportation maintenance worker before retiring from MDOT in 2019. For retirement, Phil and Katie moved to Mio, MI. Throughout their 27 years of marriage, they enjoyed camping, kayaking and fishing. He was a diehard Michigan State football fan and a lifelong Detroit Tiger fan. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, quirky sayings and unique outlook on life. Phil's idea of paradise was sitting around a bonfire with family and friends enjoying a cold one and solving the world's problems. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Katie) Barncard, sister Linda (Peter) Clarke, brothers Earl Barncard and Neal (Liz) Barncard, sisters-in-laws Patricia (Bob) Van Zandt, Nancy (Gary) Potts, brothers-in-law Richard Titler and Christopher Prahl. Phil had many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, his military family and those he fondly referred to as "brothers from another mother". His special niece, Melissa (Roc) Campbell, who will always remember him as daddy Phil, and her two daughters, Brooklyn and Harper held a special place in his heart. He is preceded in death by his parents Ken and Helen Barncard, sisters-in-law Kristina Barncard and Barbra Titler, brother-in-law Michael Prahl and his beloved pets Howard, Charlie, Harriette, Fred and Barney. Per his wishes cremation has taken place. Internment will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI on Friday, May 5th at 10:30am. A luncheon will be held at 1pm on May 5th at the Richard F. Smith American Legion Post 29 located at 3200 Lansing Ave. in Jackson, MI. Family and friends are welcome to attend one or both events in honor of Phil.
