When he was home on leave earlier this year, Phillip C. Edmundson took his mother out to look at houses. She saw one she liked _ so he bought it for her. "He didn't have to do it," his father Robert said. "He wanted to do it for me and his mama." Edmundson, 22, of Wilson, N.C., was killed June 1 when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle was blown up by an enemy mine in Ramadi. He was based at Fort Carson. Edmundson was a quiet child who enjoyed hanging out with his sister and two brothers. "If you saw one, you saw the others," said his uncle, Charles. And though he never played organized sports, he was a good athlete. "He could throw a football real good," said childhood friend Lynwood Pegues. "I tried to get him to be a quarterback." He got his high school diploma at Wilson Technical Community College and worked at a restaurant before joining the Army three years ago _ a move that surprised his family, since his parents hadn't allowed weapons around the children. He said he wanted to get a better education, serve his country and make his family proud. "He sure did. He made all of us proud," his uncle said.

Not sure what to say?

To those who knew and loved Phillip Edmundson, (I knew him as Ed,)

Know that to this day I am, and for the rest of my days will be, tremendously sorry for his death. We didn't speak much in the time we served together- at least not with many words. Ed did speak to me in other ways, when he would grab my shoulder to prevent me from stepping into a crater at night while I was trying to get used to my nightvision, or when he would motion for me to keep my head down and in better...

We were the closest of friends at least to me. its been almost 11 yrs and the day is still one of the hardest things for me to deal. I praise my Lord Jesus Christ to comfort me and give me strength. I have a couple things of his from the day. I thought now maybe I should give to you. We met once in Colorado springs at the memorial. I would really love to see you guys again. I had no...
