PHILLIP McKEE Obituary

McKEE PHILLIP CURTIS McKEE, III May 12, 1972 - May 31, 2013 Phillip was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on May 12, 1972. Throughout his early years he lived in Corpus Christi, Kingsville, and San Antonio, Texas. He attended Keystone School and Graduated from Health Careers High School. He did his undergraduate studies at Yale University and his graduate studies at Harvard University. He also held a research fellowship at Princeton University. Before becoming a Firefighter/EMT, Phillip was a nationally recognized expert on Internet Fraud with the National Fraud Information Center. He served on a White House Panel on Aging. For ten years, he served on the BOD of the Yale Club in Washington DC. Current President of the Capitol Area Pipe Smokers Club. Phillip served as a volunteer with the National Park Service as an EMT for special events. Phillip found the time to excel as was a nationally recognized stain glass artist, who authored the book "Make It or Break It", a how to book about stained glass art. Phillip used art as a means to deal with the harshness and reality of the memories from his experience of becoming permanently disabled on the third arriving engine company from Arlington County Fire Department, Engine 103, while responding to the terroristic attack on 9-11 at the Pentagon. Phillip met the man who would later become his husband, Nopadon. Later in life, Phillip and Nopadon met a young man who would change their lives forever. He became their son. His name is Nate. Although he was disabled, Phillip and Nopadon found solace in attending Little River United Church of Christ. On occasion you may have seen Phillip wheeling around Best Buy where he worked as the supervisor for the "Geek Squad." To assist him he was provided with a service animal, "Cloe," she became his constant companion. Phillip touched many lives throughout his forty years and will be remembered for many great accomplishments, but the most outstanding was his unselfish and brave act on 9-11. He succumbed to his injuries on May 31, 2013. Family and friend will be gathering from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Little River United Church of Christ, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003 and where The Arlington County Fire Department, family and friends will honor him with a Heroic Firefighter Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on June 11, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an educational fund set up in Phillip's memory. See guestbook for details. Arrangements by Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington. A year has passed and my heart aches more than I ever thought possible. Watching you grow into such a handsome, accomplished, and incredibly intellegent man gave us both such joy. Words could never express the pride and love your mother and I had for you. You left too soon, but I know you are in the arms of the Lord and I look forward to the day we meet again in Heaven.

I would like to thank everyone who shared in Phillip's life. He made life special for all of us.

Nope, my life in Maryland wouldn't have been nearly as exciting, interesting, or laugh-filled without you guys and to hear that Phil passed away is a big blow. I treasure the memories of our times together, whether hanging out at your house with Chloe, waiting for something to happen at the PG firehouse, or best of all, the drive to West Virginia for whitewater rafting. Phil was a very very special human being and the world is a better place for having him around as long as it did.

The day that Phil and Nop moved into University Park in 1999 they began volunteering in community activities and quickly became an integral part of the fabric of our town. In 2000, there were two vacancies on the Town Board of Elections, and as Mayor (2000-2006), I had the pleasure of appointing both Phil and Nope to fill those positions. And right away, as you might expect, Phil started to use his skills to begin reorganizing and automating the records. And then in 2003, they decided to move to northern Virginia which was closer to their work which was a big loss to our small suburban Maryland community.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the McKee family and to Nope.

I will always remember our high school years with joy! Nobody could sing, tell a joke, or make me feel happy like Phillip.

Dear Nopadon and Phillip's family, I was so sad to hear this news today. Phil was a dear friend to me in college, and I have been so sorry we had fallen out of touch after a couple moves on my end. He and I worked at the Chaplain's office together at Yale, and he always had the biggest smile on his face. And we suffered through German together... Nopadon, I remember his excitement and glee when he met you, and a lovely note you sent us once. Please know you are all in our thoughts and have our deepest condolences. We will all miss Phillip. -Marci McCoy and Amir Roth, Kensington, MD

From the moment we met in high school, I knew that Phillip was one of the most mentally and spiritually courageous people I have ever met. He was genuine and proud to be himself. I am proud to have known him, and am a better man because of Phillip. Thank you, friend, and Godspeed.

Phillip,

How do I say good-bye? Forty-one (41) short years, and now you are gone.

My beautiful nephew, I miss you so much already. I miss your wit, humor, hugs, gentleness, generosity and beautiful smile. Your death has taken a piece of my heart with you. We had so many wonderful times together. You always made me laugh no matter my fate.

Seems like just yesterday I was reading you fairy tales goodnight and rocking you to sleep. Although, I usually fell asleep first and could hear you saying, "Read to me, read to me". Yes, you loved to read. And then when you turned three...ha

Keystone School, Health Careers HS, Yale, Harvard, Princeton and now Heaven. You always did like the better things life had to offer.

I love you and know you are now at peace forever. You did so many great things, touched so many lives, helped so many in need and at the end of the day you were content in just being Phillip. Never wanted to draw attention to yourself. NOT! Just joking.

You are now surrounded by family and friends in Heaven. I'm sure God will put you to work right away, if He hasn't already!

As you watch over us each day, know that we are all okay and miss you dearly. You will never be forgotten.

I love you my precious Pito.

Phillip, I am saddened to hear that you have left us. You will always be loved and missed. I guess I was one of the lucky individuals to be apart of your life. When I knew you, you had such a zest for life. You excelled in everything that you did. You took a stained glass class and turned it into a career after firefighting. You really put your mind to it and that passion raged like a brush fire that we all should have in life. I am still in disbelief of your departure from us, but I guess God called you home. The only regret I have is the fact that I never got an opportunity to say goodbye. I will forever miss you and I love you.

I was very sad to hear the news of Phil's passing. He was a person who I think represented what I loved most about my college days: unusual, intelligent, lively, and personally and intellectually daring in many ways that I admired and continue to admire. He took the political writings of Thomas Aquinas very seriously, but himself not at all--and he made the people around him happier. The world is diminished without him in it.

It saddens me that Phil has left my life so suddenly. Although it took awhile to really develop our friendship when we were thrown together as freshman roommates, Phil became one of my closest friends and the person I always could depend upon to listen and provide advice on my most personal problem... I regret that the frequency of contact dropped off after I moved overseas, and it pains me that we never will have the chance to make it back. But my memories are the best one could hope for - filled with love, laughs, life-changing moments (our respective weddings really stand out!). I always will carry a part of him in me, thanks to everything Phil gave of himself over the years.

I was pretty close to Phil when he was a member of Ezra Stiles College at Yale and I was master of the college. We had a bond in our Catholicism, and he talked to me about his desire to become a priest. I actually thought he had entered the seminary, so I was surprised at the time of 9/11 to hear that he was a fireman in Washington--but it made me proud to learn that he had played a hero's role in the Pentagon disaster. It was very good to see him at his 15th Yale reunion in 2009, crippled from the Pentagon injury but cheerful as ever. He proudly introduced me to his partner Nope. I will always remember him as thoughtful, gentle, and kind. And as a hero.
