Phyllis Jeannette Kane, daughter of Frank and Anna Louise (Thomann) Gilchrist, was born August 3, 1922 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She received her education at Emmetsburg Community School. Following graduation, Phyllis taught school in a one room country schoolhouse. She later was employed as a telephone operator.

Phyllis and Leo enjoyed camping together and wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona. Phyllis loved to sew and made many of her children's clothes when they were younger. She was always ready to try a new recipe and looked forward to cooking and baking for her family and friends. Phyllis also enjoyed doing ceramics and making crafts. She always seemed to have a smile on her face and looked for the good in everything and everyone.

Not sure what to say?

Phyllis was my Mother’s best friend. When I bake ginger cookies it is Phyllis’s receipt from the Cylinder cook book.

Sending thoughts of comfort to the Kane Family. Wow! Ninety-three years of living for your mom! She was definitely part of my Cylinder Family---as is each of you. I love remembering our days; somehow life seemed so simple then. I wonder if it really was. Holding a candle in my heart for all of you.

Dear Kane Family: May good memories be your treasure as you remember your loved one. Phyllis was a lovely lady. Our sincere sympathy, Marcie and Bill Frevert

So sorry to hear about your mother. I remember her from Cylinder school days when you were all students there.

We just heard about your loss. We are in Minnesota and will be unable to be there. Phyllis and Leo were a really great couple and we were blessed to know them. They will both be missed.

Phyllis was my Mother's best friend. Our parents were winter Az. Camping buddies. Our families grew up in Cylinder and it was a good lesson in community. The loss of Phyllis is a book of the past that I will mourn.

Phyllis was a like a grandmother to me. She was a honorary grandmother at my wedding! My family is unable to make the funeral but send our love to all! You all are in our thoughts and prayers!

Our deepest sympathy to Phyllis's family. Phyllis was a wonderful lady. God bless her. Debbie Walsh

Reading the obituary brought back many fond memories in Cylinder. Going to all of the ladies' get-togethers and especially to the ceramic store with Grandma Ida, Phyllis was always there! Thinking of your family.
