Phyllis Gatling Monroe, 94, daughter of John Morris Gatling and Clara Mardre Gatling, died Saturday, June 6, 2015 in Pensacola, FL.

She was born in Norfolk, VA and grew up in Windsor, NC. Phyllis attended St Mary's School and Junior College in Raleigh, NC where she graduated as Salutatorian.

Phyllis married Goodwin Waldo Sandvig of Brooten, MN in a ceremony on June 20, 1942 in Windsor, NC. LCDR Sandvig USN was killed on March 8, 1951 in a plane crash near Patuxent River Maryland. They had two children, John C. and Richard G.

Phyllis married Jack Pendleton Monroe August 1952, in Virginia Beach, VA. Jack had two children from a previous marriage, Jack P. Jr. and Janet.

As the spouse of naval officers, Phyllis lived and traveled in many parts of the world, spending time with presidents, kings, queens, sheikhs, business executives and famous actors. She loved the different experiences and thoroughly enjoyed getting acquainted with different people of many nationalities. Phyllis has made Pensacola home since 1966.

Phyllis was preceded in death by ADM Jack P. Monroe, USN on February 21, 2006 in Pensacola. She is survived by her children; Col. Jack P. Monroe USMC (ret.) (Pat) of Fredericksburg, VA., Janet M. Marshall of Clarksville, MD, John C. Sandvig (Janis) of Cumming, GA and CDR Richard G. Sandvig, USN (ret.) (Lauren Hughes), Washington, UT, as well as seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Phyllis will be returning to her hometown after many years and will be buried at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Windsor, NC.
