Phyllis Anne Schroeder, daughter of Martin and Florence (Myer) Simonsen, was born May 16, 1941 in Milford, Iowa.  She began her education in country school near Emmetsburg and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in  1959.

On September 27, 1959 Phyllis was united in marriage to Hans Schroeder at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa.  They were blessed with three children.  Phyllis and Hans made their home on a farm north of Emmetsburg, where they raised their family.  Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother.  She enjoyed raising a large garden each summer and caring for her flower gardens.  After retiring from farming, Phyllis and Hans moved into Emmetsburg.

Phyllis was a faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was active in church circle. She taught the 3 year old Sunday School class for over twenty years which was truly a testament to her endless patience.  She loved each and every class she taught.  She helped with the Scandinavian Tea and made the communion bread for church services for many years.

Phyllis enjoyed her career selling Tupperware, which she was currently still doing, hoping to get home from the hospital in time to attend a show she had booked.  She enjoyed playing cards and board games with her family, especially Monopoly and Rummy Royal.  She was a talented seamstress, sewing clothing for her children when they were young, making quilts and doing Hardanger embroidery.  Phyllis also enjoyed decorating cakes and weaving baskets and art forms that she enhanced with intricate shell decorations.  Her family and friends were truly blessed to receive these gifts from Phyllis.  She was an avid Vikings and Twins fan and rarely missed watching a game.

Phyllis will be remembered for her loving and understanding temperament and for the wonderful hugs she shared with everyone that came into her life.

Phyllis passed away Monday, December 11, 2023 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 82.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Florence Simonsen; her husband, Hans; a sister, Frances Barlow; and a son-in-law, Cal Foster.

She is survived by her children, Deborah Foster of Ankeny, Iowa, Mary Soppeland (Ron) of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Mark Schroeder (Connie) of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her grandchildren, Kevin Klotzbier (Erin), Chelsea Potter, Alyssa Schroeder, Rachel Halma (Skylar), Rebecka Soppeland, Miranda Soppeland; step grandson, Evan Gunderson; great grandchildren, Dayna Klotzbier, Bailey Klotzbier, Arya Klotzbier and Elara Potter;  her brother, Dean Simonsen (Carol) of Crystal River, Florida; as well as many other relatives and friends.
