Queenester Abston Jones transitioned peacefully on January 19, 2024, surrounded by love, laughter, and family. Her final words were a punchline to a joke that filled the room with laughter.
Queenester was born on May 16, 1940, to Bennett Abston Sr. and Jesse Mae Abston in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At the age of 8 she moved north to Detroit Michigan; she was a self-described bookworm spending countless hours in the neighborhood bookstores and libraries.
She graduated from the nationally ranked Cass Technical High School. After High School, she began working at the Michigan Employment Commission, then the U.S. Post Office where she met her husband, Sylvester who preceded her in death and later worked at the I.R.S. while attending Wayne County Community College, earning an Associate of Arts Degree.
She the earned a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and a Master of Art in Teaching (Suma Cum Laude) from Wayne State University. She started her teaching journey in Detroit at Henry Ford, Central, and finally her Alma Mater Cass Tech.
When Sylvester retired, they moved south to Palm Coast, Florida where she began teaching, first at the “Upstair School” in Bunnell, Florida and finally at Flagler Palm Coast High School where she retired in 2002.
“Queen,” as she was affectionately known and Sylvester were lifelong Presbyterians, first members of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Detroit, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast.
Queen was active in her church and community, which included the Senior Adult Ministry, (FHA) Future Home-Makers of America, The Afro-American Caribbean Heritage Society, The Michigan Club, and the East Central Florida Club. Her legacy lives on in the family, friends, students, and neighbors that she loved so much.
A visitation will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 156 Florida Park Drive N, Palm Coast, FL, 32137 on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. Following the service, you are invited to a reception in Mehaffey Hall where you may greet the family.
The family of Mrs. Jones entrusted her arrangements to Clymer Funeral Home & Cremations.
