Rachel was my closest friend and roommate during our first year of doctoral studies at the U of Michigan 1965-1966. I was fresh out of Brooklyn N.Y. and had never met anyone from the South. It was a delightful linguistic and personal encounter. i was coming back to the university after a 13 year hiatus and had lots of catching up to do. Rachel was my dear friend, scrabble player, EMU basketball game partner, and tea time pal.
Neighbors for over six years, I enjoyed the company and advise from this wise woman who lived life. My children and I spent hours laughing, learning and being inspired.

Oh my God. I just learned of her passing today...March 17. Rachel was a great friend and we missed her for the last 4 years when we had to stop traveling to attend a Master's program. We had no idea she was ill, and I kept thinking we hadn't heard from her and...oh, I should have called. Rachel...thank you for you and I pray you're having a helluva journey with your soul mate. We love you.

Rachel and her late husband Ted were among the loveliest and most hospitable people I have known. Great connoisseurs of a wide range of music, generous and welcoming hosts (Rachel's culinary skills were superb, her scratch biscuits legendary) and affectionate cat parents. Memories of times spent with them are treasured. I can still hear Rachel's charming Virginia drawl. Godspeed! Please let me know when the celebration of life will take place.
