She was born September 16, 1985 in Anderson and had been a Pendleton resident most of her life. She graduated from Pendleton Heights High School in 2004 and was currently a junior at Anderson University as a Lilly Scholar Studying Bible and Religion. Rachel’s passion in life was her faith and teaching others about Bible and religion. She was a life long member of the Catholic Church and in the last three years was actively involved with the Ovid Community Church as a youth leader and teacher. Her goal was to earn her PhD and become a college professor.

She was a scholar and veracious reader. She was driven to learn and received many honors to include: Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, Anderson University Distinguished Student Scholarship, Anderson University and National Dean’s List during her Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years, Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society, Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion Organizations.

Finally she loved music, singing for charity events and enjoying choir participation throughout her school years and was most recently a member of the Anderson University Women’s Chorus.

She is survived by her parents, Mike and Dana Lakes of Pendleton; sister, Jennifer Lakes of Pendleton; maternal grandparents, Larry “Pop” and Marilyn “Gram” Hexamer of Pendleton; paternal grandmother, Patricia Lakes of Anderson; aunts and uncles, Jay and Marta Hexamer, Michelle and Jim Afflitto, Mitch and Kris Lakes, Maury and Jenny Lakes, Matt Lakes and companion, Lisa Isom and Mark Lakes; cousins, Benjamin and Eleanor Hexamer, Bryce and Lily Afflitto, Daniel Lakes and Laura Lakes; and her puppy, Missy Rose.

Not sure what to say?

To the Lakes family,
I was very saddened to hear that Rachel had passed away. Rachel and I were in the same grade and attened grade school together. We also sang in the choir together as well as played on the same softball team one year. My parents also send their condolances (Ron & Cindy Conner). My mother knew Mr. Lakes from a co-op at Delco. We would like to extend our thoughts in prayers in your time of mourning. God Bless

Dearest Mike, Dana and Jennifer,

Her smile and gentle personality blessed all who ever came in contact with her. May God grant you peace and console your hearts. The Kimmerling's

Mike and Dana, I was so saddened to hear of Rachel's passing and, too, that I could not be with you. What a beautiful young woman, in every way; she is certainly a reflection of her parents. Knowing that ones like your daughter, Rachel, populate heaven only makes sweeter the thought of her being there to greet us one day and to re-introduce us to so many others we have loved. God knows we need many more like your Rachel here with us, and he takes precious ones like Rachel to him only when...

Please accept by deepest condolences. Although I didn't know Rachel personally, I processed her scholarships at Anderson University & I know what an oustanding student she was. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mike
I'm sorry for your loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers. I just heard about this today 4/13. Sorry I missed you at the funeral home.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Dear Dana, Mike, and Jennifer,
Words cannot express my sympathy for you and your family during this time. I remember the fond days of the girls and I playing when we were younger and have such fond memories. Rachel was also in my American Literature class this semester, and she always had wonderful and deep insight to offer--her smile and warmth will be missed greatly. May God comfort you beyond comparison during this time.

Much love,
Catherine

I did not know Rachel personally, I do know her grandparents and mom. (Her grandma Marilyn worked with my mom, Diana and I remember the get togethers they had and looking up to Dana and Jay. I remember how beautiful I thought Dana was and still is. Rachel is just as beautiful)
I just wanted to say that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I pray that God will hold you in his arms during this very difficult time. Remember that she is now your...
