Rachel Witmer

It's with great sadness that I read Rachel's obit in today's Oregonian. I had lost touch with her - another casualty of the pandemic, but I keep fond memories of the many aventures we shared. We met on the old growth forest research crane in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and thereafter hiked and skied many miles together, in the Methow Valley, in Copper Canyon (Mexico) and in Switzerland, among others. She was quiet and reserved, but when she spoke up it always was with great wisdom. I...

Rachel hiked every trail in the Columbia Gorge, and took me on hikes to little known places of incredible beauty...and always with the best homemade cookies for a mid-hike treat. She was a lovely person with a love for nature and wildflowers that made every hike special. She will be missed.
