I wasn't a close friend of Ralph but I remeber him from when I lived in the Back of the Yards. I remember standing out in front of Blackie's Tavern on the corner of 48th and Loomis and seeing Ralph on his way to work. He would stop and chat with the guys but would eventually say he had to be going because he was on his way to work. He always had an easy smile and he seemed much older than his years at the time like someone who had a purpose in life and knew what he needed to do to get there....
