Not sure what to say?

Like so many others shock was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the news of Randy's passing. Then the memories came rushing in. This small space and few words cannot express my feelings of loss. Randy was so much more than just my teacher (West End). He was my mentor and friend. I looked up to Randy then and I will continue to look up now.

Randy, R.I.P.

Thanks for all you did for theater in Birmingham, for ASFA, and for so many, many people.

Jeff Bauman, ASFA, Theater, '73

I was so sad to hear that Randy had passed away. Too often we get caught up in our every day lives and don't pay enough attention to things that were special in our pasts like ASFA. I was not aware that Randy was sick so it was a complete shock to learn of his passing. When I showed up from small town Alabama to "the big city of Birmingham" I felt a bit out of my element. My english classes with Randy were some of my favorites. I never would have had the chance to take an advanced placement...

Thank you, Randy, for being you and for being a part of my life. You are loved and missed by all of us who were lucky enough to have been touched by you.

I feel like I’ve been tongue-tied for the last 5 days. Losing Randy stunned me into silence. My mind has been frantically searching for memories of my interactions with him. When I think I’ve come up short, another book that we read in his class or another poem or stanza that I had to memorize comes into my mind. I’m sure that there were hundreds of ASFA students sitting in the church today at Randy's funeral, all of whom could recite the prologue to the Canterbury Tales in Old English. I can...

I graduated from ASFA in 1993 (Theatre). Randy was my English teacher during both my junior and senior years. He was passionate about every piece of literature we studied (be it Macbeth, Heart of Darkness, you name it!). He was a very vivacious and intelligent man.

Randy will always be remembered!

My and my family's world was much richer for having known, worked with, admired and laughed with Randy. From the time I first met him (my father built him a dinner theatre in his restaurant when Randy was just 19), Randy has been an inspiration and a joy. My husband, parents and I send love to Haden and the girls during this time of great loss.

I entered ASFA in 1974. Randy was my English teacher for the 3 years that followed. When I came to dance in the Alabama Ballet in 1980, I was given part-time work at the school and there was Randy scurrying about the campus, inflating everyone's sense of importance.... a natural talent of his. I then taught in the '88-'89 schoolyear, teaching Ballet 1 and Dance history and a few doors down you could hear the boisterous voice of Randy performing one of his many tapestries of...
