CARDOZO, Randolph Burwell "Ranny," 90, died Sunday, July 21, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Mary Scott Cardozo "Polly"; son, J. Scott Cardozo and his wife, Whitney; daughter, Constance C. Costas; and four grandchildren, Sydney MacMillan and Lily Scott Cardozo, Nicholas Maros and Eliza Randolph Costas. His eldest son, Randolph B. Cardozo Jr., died in 1976 at age 20. Ranny's life was defined by integrity, humility and perseverance. Born in 1923 to Constance Gooding and Randolph Burwell Cardozo, Ranny was predeceased by brothers, Mosby, Clow and Lewis, killed in WWII at 19. Ranny attended St. Christopher's School and graduated from Thomas Jefferson. At the University of Virginia, he was student council president, football team manager, and a member of Beta Theta Pi, T.I.L.K.A, Raven, the Z Society and Omicron Delta Kappa. He served in the U.S. Army Airways Communications System in China during WWII, before graduating from UVA and Rutgers' Stonier School of Banking. A vice president at State Planter's Bank and managing director of James River Capital, Ranny and three partners founded Kanawha Capital Management in 1989. He served on the boards of Sheltering Arms, The Virginia Home, St. Christopher's School Foundation, the American Red Cross, Memorial Guidance Clinic and Chastain Home for Gentlewomen. He was a beloved member of the Gloucester Banks community, the Commonwealth Club, The Richmond German and The Country Club of Virginia. In a final achievement, Ranny graduated from hospice due to a failure to decline on schedule. The family thanks Arlene Lewis, Jim Anderson, Helen Swan and The Windsor staff for their compassionate care. A service will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. I was so sad to hear that Ranny had passed. I worked with him at Scott & Stringfellow and then at Kanawha Capital Management for many years. He was a wonderful man and had such a great sense of humor. He will be missed.
