Firefighter to the Core
Raymond M. Downey was the battalion chief in charge of special operations in the New York City Fire Department.

Here's his son, Chuck, a fire lieutenant: "Dad joined the Fire Department on April 7, 1962. Coming on in the 60's, they went to a lot of fires. The war years, they termed it. In 1995 he was assigned to Special Operations Command, SOC is the acronym, as chief of rescue operations. . . .

"He was on the Gilmore Commission to fight domestic terrorism. No one's going to see it all, but I don't think anyone thought of the World Trade Center. . . .

"When the south tower went down, there was a lot of Maydays. He survived. A lot of the top brass did. These are all guys with 30- plus years. They went back in. There were two young firemen, he told them, not in the nicest language, to get out of here."

Here's Chief Downey's daughter, Marie Tortorici: "Mommy, Rosalie, is Italian. Daddy's Irish. He would have been 64 on Sept. 19. He's very spiritual. He was in Oklahoma City after the bombing. Gov. Keating gave him a set of rosary beads. He wore them every day. Well, they broke, and he kept them in his pocket. He had them with him, because they're not home. . . .

"When I was a little girl, he was working three jobs to support the family, and he was always too busy to come to the school to do fire prevention week. Last year, when my daughter was in first grade, he went to the school for fire prevention week. I don't know. It's so sad, everything. But a good thing came out of this. My sister, my father called her the baby, we just found out she's pregnant. So she felt like it was a blessing from my father."

Not sure what to say?

I am very sorry for the loss of this true hero. I am not sure if this will reach his family but I have to try. We dont have a very popular last name and I remember my father (also a former firefighter) saying that he believed we have family in New York. We also are Irish, Dad being 3/4's. If this reaches the family of Chief Downey please reach out to me. I'd love to talk about our family.

I recently visited the 9/11 memorial in New York. I was born and live in London. After discovering that someone I share a name with tragically passed away at the Twin Towers, I found Raymond's name at the fountains. I was so moved but incredibly proud to share the name Downey with such a wonderful human. I am so sorry for the loss of this true hero, and hope that this man's bravery helped with the pain. God bless, Andy Downey

Remembering Raymond on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

I pass a plaque every day in remembrance of 9/11 and think of you.R.I.P.

Dear Family,
I remember Rosalie when she would visit her aunt on Overton St., Deer Park - who lived next to Connie & Vincent Morelli (my aunt & uncle)! '
I never met Ray, however my friend Marie & I was fortunate to attend his service and we were touched by all the tributes for him! Fred & Maria, our neighbors when I lived on Pearl St., I knew Fred and his family for many years & long after Fred was born!
Recently, I have had many plaques made up and mounted on benches at...

Was a classmate of Ray at LaSalle Academy. '57'. I also lost a cousin that day. Lt. Michael Russo. FDNY.

RIP Chief.

there is a plaque where I live memorializing 9/11. I pass it almost every day and when I do I wish Ray RIP. i WILL NEVER FORGET.

Sending our heartfelt sympathy to your family. May God continue to give the needed strength to cope daily. Ray touched many lives both privately and publicly and will always be fondly remembered.
