RAYMOND G. REID

Raymond G. Reid Raymond Godfrey Maurice Reid passed away peacefully with family in attendance on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011. Ray was born in England on June 26, 1922, and immigrated to the United States in 1925. He graduated from West High School, Cleveland, Ohio. Although not yet a citizen Ray joined the Army when war broke out and served as a radio operator in France during World War II. He attended college in Shrivenham, England, after the war, was a member and president of Phi Kappa Sigma and graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio with a degree in economics. Ray worked for Square D Company in Ohio, transferred to the corporate headquarters in Illinois and retired in 1987, after 35 years. While at Square D, he became a key player in corporate personnel policy and was acknowledged by both the company and the unions as a tough, but fair negotiator. As a result of some of these negotiations, he was named an honorary colonel by the Governor of Kentucky. Ray was a Cub Scout Leader and Cubmaster, Little League Baseball manager and coach. As a longtime resident of Schaumburg, he had been president of the Schaumburg Police Pension Board, member of Our Redeemers United Methodist Church, Conant Band volunteer, an avid tennis player, and golfer. Ray will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched, including his brother, (Dr. Richard Vardaris); children, Alice Reid (Wayne Oates), Jeff Reid (Elaine), Sue Reid, Phil Reid (Andrea) and Kathy Iverhouse (Jim); grandchildren, Tommy and Bethi Oates, Christine and Kelsey Iverhouse, Amelia Reid, Heather, Justin and Laureen Baller and Don Adams; great-grandchildren, Makaylah and Alexus; and his friends, neighbors, co-workers and the Our Redeemers community. Ray was preceded in death by Miriam, his child bride of 55 years; and son-in-law, Jack Ambrister. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heifer International (Heifer .org) or the Appalachia Service Project (asphome.org). Visitation is Thursday, Feb. 3, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, 330 W. Golf Road, Schaumburg. The memorial service is Friday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at Our Redeemers United Methodist Church, 1600 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. For information, 847-882-5580.
