SPENCE, The Rev. Dr. Raymond L., Jr., 86, of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2023, surrounded by family. He was Pastor Emeritus of Second Baptist Church. Believing to the end that God's guidance never faltered, Ray slipped into the arms of his heavenly Father. He was...

Not sure what to say?

Love Dr. Spence as a pastor and his family!

Ray was our family's spiritual leader and dear friend for over three decades and we still miss him terribly every day. He made us better in our good days and lifted us up during our bad ones. This world's loss was a gain in heaven and the Lord now has an "LSU tiger" angel! Ann and his family remain in our prayers.

Ann, Walter and Lee, Words cannot express how much Ray meant to me over the last few years. He was one of the kindest souls I´ll ever meet and I am going to miss him dearly. I always loved talking with him every couple weeks about SEC football and all things boy mom. He would always say "Lee and Walter love mom!!" and told me just how special the bond I have with little Hays will be. We really became close over the last few years sharing stories, pictures and life updates. I already really...

Ann, Walter, and Lee, Our family is so saddened to learn of Ray's passing. My wife and I were just thinking of him recently wondering how he was doing. We ran into Ray and Ann at the ER at Henrico Drs. after he had a fall at the river, never a concern for himself, only concern for our Daughter who was there for her own injury. Ray has been a friend to our family as long as I can remember. My Dad and Ray went on many bird hunts together which I was fortunate to be on some of those and I...

When our family moved back to Richmond 21 years ago, we joined Second Baptist and quickly realized that we were one, if not the only other Spence family at Second. When the registration book was passed each Sunday, I often noticed people down the row would bend over and give us a look. Often they would come up after the service and say "are you related to Dr. Spence?" To which I would always say "Yes, he's my Uncle Ray!" After a minute or two I'd fess up, but it was great fun and I always...

I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Ray Spence. He was one of the finest people I ever knew. I lived in Richmond for about ten years during which time I attended Second Baptist Church, where my parents and my brother and his family were all members. Ray conducted the funerals of my Grandmother, both parents and my brother and the first time I ever heard him preach, I knew he was something special. He was always welcoming and supportive and it was a pleasure to have had the...

Condolences to the family. Know that he reached so many Richmonders during his time at 2nd Baptist, myself included, and more than lived a life of service that we should all strive for. RIP Reverend Spence!

I am so saddened to hear this. Dr. Spence married my husband and myself, baptized our children and was the best preacher I have found to this day. His sermons always seemed like they were directed to each member of the congregation. There were many times that I would cry or laugh out loud when he preached. He was an important mentor in my life and I will dearly miss him. My heart and prayers go out to his family. Lynn Myer

Dr, Spence was the best. Bigger than life. One memory I will never forget, since I too am a hunter: In the 1970's when 2nd Baptist was still in a pretty rural area, he saw a huge buck outside his pastor's study. The Rev. got his gun and sent that buck straight to meet his Maker and to the Spence's grill. Ironically, and unexpectedly, I followed in his footsteps and became a pastor. Guess he showed me you can be a man's man and still be a pastor. Much love and comfort to Mrs. Spence and...
