The world bid farewell to one of its great characters on December 30, 2020, as Raymond P Thorne, of Salem, Oregon and Glendale, Arizona, passed away in Arizona. With a personality bursting at the seams, Ray lit up any room he entered with his smile, voice, charisma, and mischievous sense of...

Not sure what to say?

Of all of the administrators I had an opportunity to work with in the public sector, none was more real than Ray. His humor had a way of removing any barrier that stood in the way of creating a real and lasting relationship. But it was his wisdom and common sense that made him the very leader that he was. Having moved to Bandon has taking me out of the loop of missing those very dear old friends like Ray. I have missed that smile and laugh for years.

I have not seen Ray or Jeane for years but in the late 70's and early 80's I was privileged to be involved with them. I missed them over the years and miss them now. If you do have a celebration of life please let me know when and where it is in this weird time and year. Love you both Steve Gorham

We wondered how one could summarize the life of such a dynamic, creative, person like Ray; but Jean, Valerie, and Squirrel Meat (Greg), you have done an excellent job. Valerie and Greg - you are Ray's legacy and we can not think of finer examples than you. Blessings to you all!

I worked with Ray many years ago as counsel to the Employment Division. He always kept me on my toes. So sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to the family

Ray was a true friend. We shared some fantastic laughs on trips together. My son is named after him; he was a terrific Santa Claus on the phone. As stated, he had thousands of friends who were strangers but once.He mentored me in many areas of life, and I was honored to be his best man when he married his wonderful wife Jean. I loved him.

Ray was my biology teacher at Mazama Mid-High School (later became a 4-year high school) in Klamath Falls, OR in the mid-1970s. He was the first teacher to inspire me to major in biology at OSU. His classes were hard but fair and his personality "lit up the classroom." I definitely remember his wheelies in the hallways - students loved this - I salute his life well-lived!

Ray served on the board of directors for Salem Child Development Center for several years.During that time he was instrumental in so many decisions that helped to grow the center into what it is today.Indeed his wicked humor is legendary, as is his intelligence and kind heart. Love to Jean,Greg,Valerie and Lauren.

I was Raymond's neighbor and lifelong friend since the 4th grade. We shared many, many adventures together. I will miss Raymond so much! I have so many wonderful memories of our times together . My sincerest sympathies go out to his wonderful wife Jean, and Raymond's two wonderful children Greg and Valerie, and the rest of his family.
