Reginald Tate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 2, 2018.
Loving husband, father and grandfather Reginald Gordon Tate passed away in the early morning hours of January 2, 2018 in Westside Hospital in Plantation, Florida after battling multiple health conditions. He was born on January 14, 1945 in Laconia, New Hampshire to Barbara Mae (Avery) and Howard Samson Tate.

Known as "Reggie" to his friends he graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelor's in Education and Spanish and returned to receive his Master's to become a School Psychologist. He was employed by the Newark Public Schools for over 30 years as a school psychologist and at the time of his retirement as supervisor in the Department of Child Guidance.

He performed his duties in a manner that always championed the rights of children, particularly those with handicaps. His bilingual skills, sensitivity to diversity, and overall knowledge of educational law served him well as a valued member of his professional community. Throughout his career he served on numerous committees striving to improve the quality of delivery of services to the children of Newark.

He will be remembered for his wit and wisdom, as a highly respected, meticulously organized, and dedicated professional who served as a supportive and knowledgeable mentor and adviser to many. Reggie was a fan of observing nature and fishing on Lake Shawnee. A professional educator, he was a teacher to family, friends and neighbors striving to always help those in need with sage advice or a smile.

He is survived by Gladys, his wife and partner of 44 years, his daughter Monica, son-in-law Ben Atkins, and two grandchildren that he adored Cameron and Mackenzie. In addition he has numerous nephews and nieces, sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Josè Perez who loved him like a brother, and his brother Jon Tate. Funeral services will be held on January 20, 2018 in All Saints Church in Sunrise, Florida with a future memorial service to be held in New Jersey at a date in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Lake Shawnee Club at 4 West Shawnee Trail, Wharton NJ, 07885. https://www.lakeshawneeclub.org

I just discovered that Reggie passed away. He was my supervisor-mentor when I started in Newark as a School Psychologist. As a matter of fact, he lead me down to personnel to apply for a full time position. Reggie left me with some of his Psychologist materials when he left Newark Schools. I will always remember him as a supportive and knowledgeable professional. Jim Brown
