Bernie brought light to our world, and he brought enlightenment to his many directees, of which I was one for 17 years. Bernie shepherded me into ministry as a midlife/second career person, guided me into a seminary pastorate, preached at my ordination, and officiated my marriage to Anne. I am sorry not to be there to celebrate the life of this great man. (My church where I'm the minister is in northern NJ and can't make it that weekend.) I first knew Bernie when he was at Yale--his second time there in the early 1970s when he was on sabbatical. We resumed our friendship after his retirement when I came to this church in the Cent.
