Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. - Hellertown Obituary

Richard O. Benner, Sr., 100, of Lower Saucon Twp. died Friday, December 17, 2021 surrounded by his children.  He is the husband of the late Joyce A. (Bechdolt) Benner, who died Sept. 21, 2015.  Richard was born in Bethlehem on November 6, 1921 to the late Harry and Margaret (McFadden) Benner.  He was a Contract Analyst at the former Bethlehem Steel for 25 years and also worked as a Northampton County Voting Registrar for 20 years.  Richard is a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, Bethlehem and was a proud member of the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame. He truly enjoyed gardening. Richard, as being a full-blooded Irishman, thrived on St. Patrick’s Day.  Known throughout the Lehigh Valley for dressing up as a leprechaun and handing out gold coins to children was his great joy.  While visiting numerous business’s, churches and government facilities, he would bring happiness and his Irish good luck to everyone.  It was truly his day to shine.  We will all miss his repertoire of Irish jokes.

Not sure what to say?

I am so proud to call him my Uncle. I have always admired him as a strong person who was able to overcome anything. He was so smart , funny, & very caring. He was so good to my Mom, always there for her & taught me the meaning of true sibling love . He leaves me with his wonderful love of the Irish, his zest for living life to its fullest & loving his God no matter what trials are bestowed on us. Uncle Rich see you again at our Irish Party in the hereafter.

Kathy and family - Blessings to you all and sharing sincere sympathy in the passing of your dear Dad

Mr. Benner was the best "boss" I ever had. He was fair, generous and
appreciative. I enjoyed the many years I worked with him. I will miss his
smile, his jokes and his cheery demeanor. Condolences to the Benner
family.

The Benner Family Sorry for the loss of a great man... We met Dick at a Lower Saucon Township meeting back in 1969. He was a caring man anyone could love, respect and call him your friend..Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family... RIP

Dick and his wife loved the comics we do. They were sponsors many times in January their wedding anniversary and Joyce's birthday month. Wasn't too long ago he told me that his eyesight was giving him problems and to stop sending them. Of course, he ended our phone call like always with a repeated Irish joke.
Joyce told us one day she was in the other room, and he was at the table. She heard this noise and him banging a bit on the table. She thought he swallowed something. Here when...

I will miss my Pop Pop. He was truly the best Irishman I knew. We used to gat about all dressed up on St. Patty’s day delivering gold coins (chocolate candy) to various places in our area spreading Irish joy and laughter. He always shared a joke or two. RIP. Love, Deanna

To the Benner Family

My deepest condolences to Dennis, Dave and Kathy all though I wasn´t with him long it was a great joy caring for him. He always would thank me tremendously for taking good care of him. I enjoyed eating dinner with him and he would share his Irish jokes. I was honored to know him and care for him all though it wasn´t very long I will miss him and so glad I got to know him.

I worked with Dick for Northampton County. A true gentleman. I will never forget St. Patrick’s Day when Dick was in his glory. Blessings to family.
