My dear friend, Richard Brewer, how sweet the sound of your name. A flood of memories. The sounds and sights of nature and your remarkable legacy, inspiring thousands of students and fellow nature lovers, instilling in them the science and passion needed to connect to Western Michigan´s ecology and far beyond. Near to home, The Kalamazoo River Watershed and Allegan State Forest were of special concern to him. I first met Richard in the mid 1970´s at an Audubon meeting in Kalamazoo....

Dr. Brewer's scholarship on land trusts and the conservation industry have been so influential and helpful in my research. I'm so thankful for his legacy and the positive impact he had on his world. He will be misssed.

We were very sorry and sad to learn of Richard's death on March 25th. Richard was a highly talented and respected fellow ecologist and he made many extremely valuable contributions to our understanding of the ecology of southwest Michigan and the distribution and abundance of breeding birds in Michigan. I was Richard's chaplain at Friendship Village and I am so thankful to have known him over the past few years. My favorite memory of him was his whistling as we would be singing hymns. He had such a sweet spirit and he will be missed.
