Carlson, Richard W. Beloved husband of Jolene (nee Bergstrom); Loving father of Rachel, Andrew (Kate) and Emily (Matthew) Tucker; Cherished grandfather of Jake, Lyda, Liam, Lucia and Anders; Fond brother-in-law of John (Pat), Joan Thate and Judi Brooks; Dear uncle of Britt (Joe) O'Malley, Barb Bergstrom, Bill (Jenny) Bergstrom and Joey Thate. Richard was a professor at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago where he taught students spiritual formation and ministry for 35 years. From the beginning, his ministry was fueled by social justice: in the 1960s, he worked with SNCC to register African American voters, wrote essays on Black Power, and marched with Martin Luther King Jr. In those early years, he lived his values doing urban ministry on Chicago's Westside at Douglas Park Covenant Church. In the years that followed, generations of students at North Park learned to work for the kingdom of God on earth under his care. Richard loved God, his family, his students, and his colleagues. The memorial service for Richard is at North Park University's Anderson Chapel, 3225 W. Foster, Chicago, IL on August 11th at 2:30. Memorial gifts may be sent to: C. John Weborg Center for Spiritual Direction, North Park Theological Seminary, 3225 W. Foster Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625; or, Ministry Mentors, P.O. Box 2697, Glenview, IL 60025. Arrangements entrusted to PETERSON-BASSI CHAPELS. Info 773-637-4441 or www.petersonbassichaples

Not sure what to say?

JOLENE...I SO WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN AT THE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR RICHARD AT NORTH PARK!!! I AM PRAYING DAILY FOR GOD TO COMFORT & SUPPORT YOU & YOUR FAMILY!!!

Dear JoLene, please forgive my fingers for misprinting your name, I tried to add my entry before leaving for church; in haste I fear. I have fond memories of you & Richard when we attended North Park Church, your ministry was a gift to my family.

JoAnn, I am praying for you & your family as you walk through today. May God fill you with the peace that passes all understanding.

Dear Carlson Family,
Our prayers and thoughts are with you.
Warmest regards,
Stan and Ruth Kottke

Our beloved friend and brother my be gone but his memory and the lessons he taught will never be forgotten. The Light of Christ in him continues to shine in our hearts.

Thinking of you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time and the days ahead. Peace.

Dear Carlson family: My prayers are with you during this time of mourning. Richard left a rich legacy in all the students whom he taught. As I said on Covchurch.org, many of my memories are from Douglas Park Covenant Church, where I was a member for about 8 years. I moved there because I had no money and had just started working for the Court. I soon realized that I was called to be a presence in that setting, just by being there to show my openness to racial reconciliation and harmony. ...

Dearest friends, we love you deeply. We are grateful for you and for Richard. We hold you in our hearts and prayers.
