Not sure what to say?

My friendship with Rick was much too brief. Rick's love of life and family was very evident at a family gathering in Rick's brother's home to celebrate his nephew's engagement to my daughter. One of Rick's famous toasts was directed to me and I will never forget the warmth and the love from which he spoke. A true gentleman in every way. My heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Helene and their family. May their pain and sorrow be lifted with the wonderful memory of Rick soon. Thanks for the...

I had the honor of working with Dr. Elkus at Children's Rehab Services. He truly was a child's greatest cheerleader. He got such joy in watching children take their first steps after surgery, just like a proud parent. He loved to talk about his family and was so proud of his children and their accomplishments. He will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Rick was born in Cincinnati and lived here until he went "South." All during our childhood Rick and I were friends. We were not talk everyday friends. But, we were friends. The thing I remember most about Rick is the "twinkle" in his eye and the smile on his face. Over the past 45 years we lost contact with each other. But, I heard about him from mutual friends. I heard about Rick and what wonderful work he was doing in the medical profession. It did not surprise me. When I heard last...

Active military duty recently moved us from Birmingham to Tampa. My husband and I were both long-term patients of Dr. Elkus and will truly miss his care. Dr. Elkus was very warm and sincere and took such good care of us. We offer our most sincere sympathy to his wonderful family. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Elkus has been my doctor and friend for more than 20 years. He always treated me like I was the only patient he had. I'm sure he treated all his patients the same way. Often we would talk about travel and photography. He was my biggest cheerleader. I will truly miss him.
My love and condolences to his family.
Karen

We need to be here.

Dr Elkus was one of the kindest, soft spoken people I have ever met. Before I came to work at St. Vincent's I saw him as a child in high school, when I tore ligaments in my ankle. The doctor my mom used to work for called him up and he saw me right away. Several years after that incident, I came to St. Vincent's to work and he was one of the first doctors I had to get films for. He didn't remember me right off, but as soon as I mentioned Who my mom was he went way back to that day I saw him...

Rick Elkus was one of the first physicians I met soon after my arrival in Birmingham almost 30 years ago--we both worked with children at the Arthritis Clinic of the State Crippled Childrens (now Children's Rehabilitation Services) Services. He remained a close colleague since that time. I have referred patients and family members to him and have enjoyed hearing about and seeing the success of his practice and his love and pride in his family. Rick's death is a great loss to the Birmingham...

28 years ago in November, our only child, Tim, was born with a severe club foot. Our pediatrician called in a Dr Richard Elkus. My mother who was the 3rd employee at Brookwood Hospital had never heard of him as we had not either. She did some checking around and was told by several of his peers that Dr. Elkus had a wonderful reputation and that they hoped they could retire with a reputation like he had come to Birmingham with. From that moment on my husband and I became STRONG supporters of...
