Richard “Dick” E. Elston, MStg USMC (Ret), age 90, of Dyer, IN passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020.  Beloved husband of the late Doris.  Loving father of Scott Elston and Cynthia (Terry) Phillips.  Devoted grandfather of Terriko (Michael) Griffin and Richard Elston and great-grandfather of Kristin, Joeseph, and Yumi.  Dear brother of the late Charles Lowell Elston.  Also preceded in death by his parents Lowell and Signe Elston.  Mr. Elston was a Marine Corps Veteran, serving in both the Korean War and Vietnam War.  He was a member of the Model A Restorers Club  (MARC) in Highland, a member of the Dyer VFW Post #6448 and the American Legion Post #66 Griffith, IN and the Calumet Detachment Marine Corps League.  Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 from 3:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Smits Funeral Home 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. I was sad to hear about Dick's passing recently. Because of circumstances currently, I was not able to attend Dick's funeral services. I was told by my brother Jim how beautiful it was. The Elston's and Marchert's go back 80 some years. Back when Chuck Elston was dating my sister Norma and Dick and my brother Fred were starting their loyal friendship. I believe it was Fred Marchert who first introduced Doris to Dick. We all knew that when Dick stopped attending our Memorial Service for...

Was deeply saddened to learn of Dick's passing. Our families go back more than 80 years together. Dick and my oldest brother Fred were best friends and enlisted in the Marine Corps together as they did everything else together throughout grade school, high school and beyond. Fred was killed in the Korean War in 1952. A loss that I know was felt by Dick as much as the rest of our family. He would tell me every time we met down through the years how much he missed his old boyhood buddy. ...

My dear and long time friend was one of the finest gentlemen I ever knew. We shared alot of range time together and enjoyable trips down to Louisville, Kentucky. We shared a collector's passion. He was always a very welcome guest in our home. He had a mesmerizing affect on our dogs who recognized his car as soon as he pulled into our driveway.
Dick was a true and loyal American who loved his country and his beloved Marine Corp. Eva and I will miss his visits and his friendship. Rest...
