Lewis E. Wint and Son Funeral Home - Clarkston Obituary

ENGELHARDT, Richard R. of Pontiac; passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at the age of 64. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 16, 1956. Beloved son of Hideko (nee. Taguwa) and the late Ray Engelhardt. Loving brother of Carol (Patrick) Miller of Riley Twp. Dearest uncle of Derek Brown (Kyle Belcher) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Richard grew up in the Sterling Heights/Utica area and graduated from Adlai E Stevenson High School Class of 1974. He attended Macomb and Kalamazoo Community College and Western Michigan University majoring in Computer Programming. He then joined the Marine Corps and was most proud of his service where he also continued his education. He received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from National University in San Diego, CA demonstrating a high level of competence. He was proficient in several operating systems, programming and databases.

He received many awards and certifications which included: Navy Achievement Medal, Certificate of Achievement, Good Conduct Medal, Letter of Recognition USMC Schools Honor Graduate, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Rifle Expert Badge, Employee of the Quarter Government of Guam, Certificate of Recognition JLC Center of Guam, ORACLE Certified Professional and 2 Meritorious Masts (outstanding leadership/professional knowledge and high level of technical knowledge). He implemented new ideas in software programming and because of his esemplastic powers, he saved the Marine Corps considerable man-hours in research and battalion's training management system. After his honorable discharge he transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve.

He worked as a computer programmer for several companies as an employee and contractor. He also had his own computer repair business. When he became disabled, he continued his education receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology in Web Design from Colorado Technical University, where he graduated Suma cum Laude. He had just completed 50% of his masters before succumbing to his illness. He had a big heart and was most generous. He will be truly missed.

Not sure what to say?

I only recently learned of Rick’s passing. I was one of Rick’s college roommates at WMU. From the moment I first met Rick, I just knew he was very smart and a hard worker. I lost track of him for quite a while and then happened to run into Rick when he had an office on the President’s floor at WMU, and I was also working at the University. Initially shocked when I saw him (he was wearing a suit and very professional looking), we sat down in his office near the President and got all caught up....

Richard was kind with a big heart. I met him through a friend before he joined the marines at Kalamazoo. I lost touch with him many years ago and decided to look for him after our common friend passed away last week. It breaks my heart to find that Rick is also gone. So long my friend.

Richard was good and honorable friend who will be remembered fondly. May his memory bing strength and love to his family.
