I still recall the wall hanging in his office, made by one of his daughters, about combining strength with gentleness. I think that it described him very well. It was truly a privilege to work at 3M with Richard Fayling. On his office wall was a hanging created by one of his daughters that said something like: "Nothing is as strong as gentleness, and nothing is as gentle as true strength." It fit.

I first met Dick in 1966 when I interviewed at 3M. Our career paths often crossed and Dick and I enjoyed our interactions. He was an expert in magnetic technology, and 3M profited greatly by his work. Always a gentleman and a great person.
