Richard E. “Red” Gagnon, 74, of Westfield died Thursday in Baystate Medical Center. Red was born in Springfield the son of the late John E. Gagnon and his beloved mother Ruby of South Hadley. He grew up in Agawam and has lived in Westfield for the past 19 years. He owned and operated Commercial Disposal for many years, The Full Cycle Compost Facility and The Master Garbologist Company. He was a past President of the New England Chapter of the National Solid Waste Management Association. He also ran the “Cash for Trash” Tournament for many years at Shaker Farms County Club, fundraising for the Child & Family Services of Springfield. Red was an avid sports fan and 35-year season ticket holder for both the Red Sox and Springfield Indians/Falcons. He led and coached his own company softball team and was the team’s ace slow ball pitcher. Red was full of corny jokes that his kids, and colleagues, would just smile and shake their heads at. A very respectable businessman in the community for over 45 years, he was someone who would never shy away from lending a helping hand whether you knew him personally or as a business competitor. He leaves his four children Sharon Laferriere and her husband Donald of Belchertown, Scott of California; Michael and his wife Laura and Joyce Law and her husband Kurt of Southampton; his former wife and friend Maureen Gagnon; a brother Jonathon and his wife June of West Springfield; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A private funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, South Hadley. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CHD (Center for Human Development) 332 Bernie Avenue, Springfield, MA 01107.

Not sure what to say?

I knew Richard during the early part of my life and he was a good friend and best man at my first wedding...remember going to Providence to see the Springfield Indians play the Providence Reds. He was a good man.

Graduated with "Red" and always thought very highly of him. Enjoyed recent get-togethers with classmates and reminiscing about our high school football team. Great man; will be missed! Just found out today about my friend's passing!!

His absence is felt daily, he was one of the most distinguished men I have known in my lifetime. He was dedicated to his family, his friends and his community. He is deeply missed by my family an myself. Edwin, Laura, Matthew & Lisa-Marie Lockhart

My condolences to the Gagnon family. Red was a true gentleman and a great friend of the WSPD..

I graduated from high school with Richie. He will be missed at our reunions that we have twice a year God Bless.

I worked for Red several years ago and we became good friends. He always shared his good fortune with everybody around him. We would talk hockey for hours on end, and attended many Hartford Whaler games together.

To Sharon, Michael, Scott, and Joyce........your father was your favorite fan, and he's now at peace.

A long time friend and business associate. A truly wonderful man!

Gordie and I knew Red and what a wonderful man he was. He and Gord can now talk hockey in Heaven. My condolences.

Red was not only a very sharp businessman, but he was a kind and humble man as well. I have known him for over 31 years and he was at all times a true gentleman and a caring business associate. We have all lost a true friend to the waste industry - He will be missed by all of us who knew him.
