Richard “Dick” Hackl (83) died November 14, 2022. Ever a true gentleman, he was rarely seen without a smile. Most loving husband of Susan, his wife of 57 years. Supportive, encouraging Dad of Peter (Becky) and Matthew. Doting Boppa to Peter’s and Becky’s GrandGirls Avery and Emma and Big Brother to both sister Kathy (Earl) Wirtz (Racine) and sister-in law Meg (Michael) Swartz (Elgin, IL).
A graduate of Racine St. Catherine’s and Marquette University, Dick happily spent most of his life in financial services sales, proud of being one of three founders and a continuing board member of the highly successful Advantage + Corporation. Dick was well known throughout the industry for his honesty and integrity. An enthusiastic 50-year resident of the Northshore, he coached youth soccer for years and was a member of the Shorewood School Board, Library Board and Planning Commission and actively supported his churches as acolyte, lector, fund raiser, and vestry senior warden. A long time Rotary Club of Milwaukee member, Dick especially enjoyed its MPS “Reading Is Fundamental” program, reading aloud to the children and helping them sign books they were given to take home. A voracious reader himself, he meticulously recorded a huge list of books read since his retirement. His favorite volunteer job was as “security” and greeter for City on a Hill’s Monthly Health Outreach for central city residents. He also loved live theater, especially the Milwaukee Rep and the American Players Theatre (APT).
Formerly an avid tennis player, Dick’s knees made him concentrate on golf. A friend said “being in his foursome was special.” In early years he loved family tent camping complete with downpours and bears, later opting for multiple long road trips including drive yourself jaunts in Europe as long as he didn’t have to read maps or navigate. Known for his warmth, wry humor, and quiet but obvious desire to serve others, he was a gentle man with whom you could be silently comfortable.
In lieu of flowers, Dick would appreciate your support of City on a Hill’s “Monthly Health Outreach,” St. Christopher’s Mission and Outreach, The Milwaukee Rep, American Players Theatre or the charity of your choice.
We will celebrate Dick’s life at a Memorial Service at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church 7845 N. River Road, River Hills, WI on Saturday, December 3, at 1:00 PM. Reception to follow.

Dick's servant heart was incomparable. Dick's love for those around him- especially his beloved wife Susan, steadfast positivity, knack for storytelling, and gentle spirit endeared him to all. He will be missed dearly and will always hold a special place in my heart.
