I was a student of Dr. Impola in the 1960s and treasured the experience. In 1967, I lived in the copper country of MI for the summer and wrote to him about the Finnish culture there. He sent back a very warm letter advising that I get out of the UP before winter set in.

He was a good friend, a very talented gentleman .. and all-around GREAT guy. We will miss him

I became acquainted with Richard in the mid-1980s when I contacted him for assistance translating a Finnish document. He was the epitome of graciousness, helping me on several occasions and always including a personal note with the translations. We met in person at a FinnFest in Minot, ND many years ago and, for me, it was a privilege. I read Kalle Paatalo's books because Richard took the time to translate them into English, and I was always be grateful for that opportunity. My sympathies to...

We are sad to hear of Richard's death. He was a talented person and a great friend. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Helvi and his children.
