For twenty-five years, I knew him and for more than fifteen, I was his friend, and I am sorry to say that, due to unforeseen events, I will be unable to attend Richard's service; but there is small comfort in remembering one of his own favorite observations, which was "Funerals are for the living."

I am saddened and speechless that we have all lost such a truly wonderful person, friend and mentor and someone who was always there to lift my spirits and help when I was in a very low place in my life. Richard taught me more about life and cultures and experiences than anyone I think I have ever met. His colorful stories of all his adventures and travels would always keep me on my toes, not to mention his knack for always making "smart cocktails"..we had been friends for almost 12 years...
