1938 - 2017
Richard Eugene "Nick" Lamons, of McCalla, AL, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, receiving his Heavenly reward on February 28, 2017.
Mr. Lamons was born in Bessemer, AL, on October 21, 1938, to Elvin and Ona Lamons. He attended Lipscomb Grammar School then graduated from Jones Valley High School in 1956 and he served his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Lamons served as a Deacon at Flint Hill Baptist Church and Reno Baptist Church until he was unable to continue his leadership. He enjoyed Joy Club, senior adult ministries and old time gospel singings. He was a man of integrity who loved God, his family, and work. He was a shining example to many others. Mr. Lamons worked for Birmingham Electric, Hercules Inc., and retired from Jim Walter Resources after numerous years as a coal miner at Mine #3. He coached girls softball for over seventeen years, was a Hueytown Softball Commissioner for four years, a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and an Envoy of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Services. He enjoyed life as a special Christmas HoHo for many years, serving as the official one for the Bessemer Christmas Parade. He made numerous visits to local nursing homes in the surrounding areas taking special time that made all residents smile. Mr. Lamons was an avid bird hunter and watcher. He loved the Auburn Tigers football, the Atlanta Braves and fishing as a special hobby. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Coy, Albert, L.B., and Roy Lamons; and one sister, Shirley Lamons Carlee.
He is survived by his wife, Syble Ray Lamons of McCalla, AL, where he made his home for the past 14 years; his brother, Melvin (Doris) Lamons of Wilsonville, AL; one sister, Wilda Lamons Mitchum of Columbus, SC; four children, Lisa (Jeff) Vernon of Athens, AL, Richard Jr. of Lake Charles, LA, Kim (Jeff) Vickers of Sturgis, MS, and Gerald (Jan) Scarbrough of Huntington, TN; 8 grandchildren, Zachary (Leigh Ann) Reeves, Austin Reeves, Hannah Reeves, Colby Vickers, Curt (Eden) Vickers, Courtney Williams, Brinn and Loren Scarbrough; 8 great-grandchildren, Bryar Reeves, Hank, Hagan, Gracie, Kip and Everly Vickers, and Wesley and Ian Williams; and Mr. Lamons leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Serving as pallbearers are: Tom Hester, Joel Copeland, Lee Edge, Ken Gamble, Rusty Warren and Jeff Russell.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 4, 2017, from 11 AM until 1 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home with the service to follow in the Chapel. Rev. Roasco Kornegay and Bro. Walton Hamner officiating with interment at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
